Keeping food safe
A few simple habits keep food safe to eat, and matter most when the power is off.
Day to day
- Keep your fridge below 5°C.
- Store raw and ready-to-eat food separately.
During a power cut
- Keep the fridge and freezer doors closed as much as you can: every opening lets the cold out.
- A full freezer holds its temperature longer than a half-empty one.
When the power returns
- If frozen food has fully thawed and been warm for a while, throw it away if you’re in any doubt: don’t refreeze it raw.
- When in doubt, throw it out.
