Keeping warm when the heating is off

A heating failure in cold weather is uncomfortable, and for older people or anyone unwell it can be more than that. The good news is that staying warm is mostly about layers, one room, and doing it safely, none of which needs anything special.

When the heating is off it is tempting to improvise, and this is where people get hurt. So, plainly:

Look out for each other

Cold weather is hardest on older neighbours and relatives and on anyone who is unwell. A quick knock on the door to check they are warm enough is one of the most useful things you can do. If you are worried about someone’s health, call 111, or 999 in an emergency.
